Chains that don't publish their fees
- ACE Cash Express: 'Each of our locations has a menu board that lists competitive check cashing fees for different check types. Because these rates vary by state and may change, it's best to visit a store near you to ask about fees.'
- Check Into Cash: 'Rules, restrictions, and fees apply. See store for details.' Fees are not published online.
- Moneytree: 'Rates vary by location, so call or stop by your local Moneytree branch to learn more!'
- Speedy Cash: 'Our check cashing fees vary based on factors such as the type of check and the check amount... visit a store or speak with a team member for details.'
Ask for the fee before you hand the check over. California’s law requires a receipt for every transaction, and Illinois requires currency exchanges to display their fees prominently.
State limits on check cashing fees
These caps apply to licensed check cashers (and in Illinois, currency exchanges), not to banks or apps. We show a state only after reading the statute or the regulator’s own page. California: Cal. Civ. Code § 1789.35. Florida: Fla. Stat. § 560.309(8). New York: set by the Department of Financial Services, in force since January 18, 2023.
| State | Maximum a check casher may charge | Law |
|---|---|---|
| California |
Also allowed: A check casher may charge a fee of no more than ten dollars ($10) to set up an initial account and issue an optional identification card ... A replacement optional identification card may be issued at a cost not to exceed five dollars ($5). | Cal. Civ. Code § 1789.35 in force since December 31, 2004 |
| Florida |
Also allowed: Direct costs of verification, set by rule, not to exceed $5. | Fla. Stat. § 560.309(8) |
| New York |
| N.Y. Banking Law Article 9-A; maximum fee set by the Superintendent (DFS Industry Letter, January 30, 2023) in force since January 18, 2023 |
| Illinois | The maximum rates are set by IDFPR rule; we did not verify the current figures, so none are shown. | 205 ILCS 405/19.3 |
Other states are not shown yet because we haven’t verified them from the statute. Choose your state in the calculator to see the cap where we have one.
Questions
How much does it cost to cash a check?
From nothing to about 10% of the check, depending on where you go and the kind of check. On an $850 paycheck: Walmart charges at most $4, Ingo Money $17 for money in minutes (free in 10 days), and Cash App nothing (up to 6 business days).
How much do check cashing places charge?
Most chains don’t publish their fees: ACE Cash Express says fees are on each store’s menu board and vary by state, and Check Into Cash, Moneytree and Speedy Cash say the same. Two publish them: Amscot in Florida (for example 9.9% for personal checks, 2.75% for tax refund checks) and Pay-O-Matic in New York (2.20%).
Is there a legal limit on check cashing fees?
In some states. California caps payroll and government checks at 3% with ID (3.5% without) or $3, whichever is greater, and personal checks at 12%. Florida caps most checks at 5% or $5, government benefit checks at 3% or $5, and personal checks and money orders at 10% or $5. New York caps government benefit checks and tax refunds at 1.5%, and other checks at $1 or 2.2%, whichever is greater.
How is the fee worked out?
Each place’s published formula: a flat amount, a percentage of the check, or both, sometimes with a minimum or maximum. Ingo’s 2% with a $6 minimum means any payroll check under $300 costs $6. Walmart’s is a flat maximum by amount band.
