Two-party and third-party checks
A check payable to “A or B” can be cashed by either person; “A and B” needs both. Check Into Cash and Moneytree list two-party checks. Apps mostly refuse checks signed over to you: Chime prohibits third-party checks and Ingo wants checks made out to you. At a bank, bring both payees.
“And” or “or” decides who signs
The rule comes from the Uniform Commercial Code, § 3-110(d), which the states adopt as their own law:
“If an instrument is payable to two or more persons alternatively, it is payable to any of them ... If an instrument is payable to two or more persons not alternatively, it is payable to all of them and may be negotiated, discharged, or enforced only by all of them.”
The same section says that if a check is ambiguous about which it is, it is payable to either person.

Questions
What is a two-party check?
A check made out to two people. Who has to sign depends on the word between the names: a check payable to “A or B” can be cashed by either; a check payable to “A and B” needs both (UCC § 3-110(d)). Walmart uses “two-party personal check” differently, for a personal check made out to you by someone else.
What is a third-party check?
A check made out to one person who signs it over to someone else to cash. Many places refuse them: Chime prohibits “checks payable to any person or entity other than you (i.e., third party checks)”, and Ingo generally doesn’t accept checks that aren’t made out to you.
Where can I cash a two-party check?
Check Into Cash and Moneytree and Ingo Money list two-party checks. At a bank, expect both payees to be needed: Wells Fargo says it can require all endorsers to be present and that the item be deposited instead of cashed.
How do I cash a check for someone else?
Usually you can’t, unless they sign it over and the place accepts third-party checks; most apps don’t. The simplest route is for the payee to cash or deposit it themselves.
