Where to cash a money order

In brief

A USPS money order can be cashed free at any Post Office: bring photo ID and sign it at the counter. Western Union and MoneyGram money orders are cashed at banks, stores and check cashers, but not at every Western Union location. Walmart takes both in some stores; Amscot in Florida charges 1.5% for its own money orders and 9.9% for others.

01

Find out who issued it

The issuer is printed on the front: the U.S. Postal Service, Western Union, MoneyGram, or a store or check casher such as Amscot. Where you can cash it, and what it costs, depends on that name.

  • USPS (postal) money order: any Post Office cashes it free, for the exact amount. Up to $1,000 each. USPS says most banks and some stores cash them too, and rural carriers may if they have enough money on hand.
  • Western Union money order: banks, grocery stores and check cashers may cash it and may charge you. Not every Western Union location can.
  • MoneyGram money order: Walmart lists MoneyGram money orders in some locations. MoneyGram’s own money-order page doesn’t say where to cash one.
  • A store’s own money order: Amscot charges 1.5% to cash an Amscot money order and 9.9% for other money orders ($4.50 on $300). Kroger says you can cash your own money order there, and that fees apply.
02

How to cash a USPS money order at the Post Office

  1. Don’t sign the money order yet.
  2. Take it and a primary photo ID to any Post Office.
  3. Sign it at the counter, in front of the retail associate.
  4. You get the exact amount on the order. There is no fee.

Money orders made out to organizations, to more than one person, or to minors have extra requirements (USPS, DMM 509.3.3). If you deposit a USPS money order in person at your bank, Regulation CC makes the whole amount available the next business day.
