Publix cashes personal and payroll checks but not money orders; H-E-B cashes government, payroll and insurance checks from $3. Meijer says it doesn’t cash checks at all.

Not listed yet

Food Lion, CVS, Walgreens, 7-Eleven, Dollar General and Target: we haven’t been able to confirm from their own websites whether they cash checks (Food Lion’s site blocked us). 7-Eleven’s help centre covers money orders but no check-cashing service. We list a store only when its own page says what it does.

Questions

Does Publix cash checks?

Yes. Publix says it cashes personal and payroll checks at all stores, at the Customer Service counter, with a driver license, state photo ID or military ID. It doesn’t publish the fee (“Fees may apply. Please see store for details”), and it sells but doesn’t cash money orders.

Does Meijer cash checks?

No. Meijer’s help centre says: “Meijer does not cash checks (payroll, tax refunds, etc).” It takes personal checks only as payment for a purchase.

Does H-E-B cash checks?

Yes. H-E-B cashes government, payroll, dividend and insurance checks, and Western Union money orders bought at H-E-B, at its Business Center, “for a fee starting at $3”. The fee depends on the amount and isn’t published; the money comes in cash or on an H-E-B Netspend prepaid card.

Does Food Lion cash checks?

We couldn’t confirm it: Food Lion’s website blocked our checks, and we don’t list a store until its own page says what it does. Call the store.

Do CVS, Walgreens, 7-Eleven, Dollar General or Target cash checks?

We haven’t been able to confirm it from their own websites either way, so they aren’t listed. Call the store before you go, or use a store that says it does.

Which store is cheapest for cashing a check?

Walmart is the only store here that publishes its fees in full: at most $4 for a pre-printed check up to $1,000 and $8 above. H-E-B gives only a starting fee ($3). Kroger and Publix say fees vary or “may apply” and don’t publish them.
