Try the writer's bank first
Chase’s guide says many banks “will cash their own checks even if you don’t have an account, provided you have the proper identification”, for a fee. Bank of America publishes its charge: $8 for checks over $50 drawn on its personal accounts, nothing at $50 or less. Wells Fargo and U.S. Bank say they may charge non-customers a fee but don’t say how much. See banks that cash checks.
What the law allows for personal checks
- California: up to 12% of the face value for a personal check (Cal. Civ. Code § 1789.35(d)), against 3% for payroll and government checks.
- Florida: 10% of the face amount or $5, whichever is greater, for personal checks and money orders (Fla. Stat. § 560.309(8)(c)).
